The Backland Sertão

The backland “Sertão” refers to the semi-arid region that covers a large part of the northeast of Brazil. With the advance of human presence through the corners of this region, a mindset, a way of being, molded the lonely life of its people. It’s a place of poverty and drought, but also regards an unique ecosystem and culture. Much of the Brazilian habits, food, music and religion are defined by the influence of this land.In the past decade, the newly arrived infrastructure, as well as new technologies, have enabled a profound cultural transformation. The new generation, now connected to new references, begins a migration searching for opportunities far from the isolation and the hard work in the dry land. Most of them are looking for the insertion in the urban society and contemporary class, as proletarian and resident of the periphery of the city, in most cases, in the coast of the Northeast itself. In this context, the old generation that remains may be the last representative of the traditional culture, permeating survival in the inhospitable environment, away from their departed heirs, living with some difficulty the convergence between the old and the new.The essay proposes a reflection on the current context of the traditional population of the “Sertão” with the arrival of modernity, which materializes in the isolation of its members incapable of incorporating new contemporary practices. In addition to the characters, the images bring elements of its universe reinforcing the relationship with its physical and symbolic space.
